Even with all kinds of access control mechanisms in place, you may ultimately come to the realization that your data is physically stored on a disk drive or tape somewhere, making it vulnerable to unauthorized access. You often come across situations where certain key column values in a table need to be encrypted to provide security. You can use the transparent data encryption feature to encrypt a column. Transparent data encryption means that the database will handle encryption and decryption automatically, without the user or the application having to manage the encryption key. In addition to regular database tables, you can also encrypt external tables using the transparent data encryption feature.
